 Facebook Messages

Facebook is not secure after all, as users of this social network, we have private settings where by we can change our private setting and regulate the people who can see our personal information and those who are not allowed to see  the information. But is this truly what happens.

There is a Facebook user in Mexico known as Katya, her personal information has been compromised due to Facebook negligence. These include the information that her Facebook friends have posted and shared like details of baby cows being massacred in Farmville.

The information that was compromised includes one message that contains a reference to the bible or a mention of digits and numbers that are associated with illuminati. The information reads that “I love you and I want to give you this hug: 33.”

The question that begs is how comes this information was accessed by someone else even though Facebook has private settings which should blocks other individuals from accessing private information.

The reason is simple; we know this because Forbes Kashmir Hill knows. And Hill knows this information because another lady by the name McKenzie Kristal who is a Facebook user knows, and Kristal knows about this because of receiving private Message from Katya on Facebook account.

The entire problems began with Hill, it so happened that after McKenzie had left Facebook. Since she was expecting a child, she decided to concentrate on real people and real life and subsequently leave the Facebook life behind. So she decided to close her account, during the past summer, she received an email message which contained information that she was being welcomed back on Facebook. The message was written in Spanish and it was her name contained in the message.

It is clear that anyone could have mistyped or misspelled their email address. After the account became active, the private information of one Katya started to be spill over to McKenzie’s Facebook life.

This is a pretty small issue that can be fixed with Facebook. During the preliminary stages of opening an account an option is usually given to users to allow them to choose an email that is associated with his or her account and one is allowed to change. McKenzie told Hill that she dissociated the account with the email address and Facebook confirmed to her that the account would be dissociated. But this was not the case.

The problem is that she was not in a position to log into the email and unsubscribe, since the account had been separated from the email. Nevertheless the Facebook messages never stopped coming.

Even when she tried to create another Facebook user account with her own email, the result was almost similar. The messages kept coming to both email addresses. She alleges that her messages that she sent to the Facebook department were never answered. When she contacted the privacy department, they assured her that all will be sorted but unfortunately nothing was done.

Efforts were made by McKenzie and Hill to contact Katya but unfortunately no one could connect them. This worsened as Katya went on to use McKenzie’s email address to sign up on  AskFm and Skype, fortunately for McKenzie she was able to convince the administration of the Skype and AskFm to shut the accounts down.

This continued until Hill contacted Facebook that the privacy saga was dealt with. According to Facebook, the confusion was caused by a bug and it was unfortunate since it rarely happens. Furthermore, Facebook added that the link which is usually provided at the bottom of emails was not working properly.

The Facebook spokesperson the problems concerning privacy were caused by multiple email typing errors, the failure to confirm the email and finally the fact that the number connected to Facebook being confirmed. The spokesman also assured Hill that its team is working on the issue so that the incident does not repeat itself in future.

According to Hill who is a reporter of a reputable magazine, the incidence could have been avoided or even the minimized if only the Facebook team responded to McKenzie’s messages the first instance.

According to McKenzie who was affected by Facebook delay to respond, the situation showed that the company does not care about the privacy of its users at all. This is due to the fact that the company failed to notify her of the situation early enough and that she never wanted to be part of Katya’s private life.
